Frequently Asked Questions
How does the therapy work?
To understand the therapeutic relationship, you can visualise it as a car journey where you are the driver and the psychologist is the passenger sitting next to you. The psychologist is there to accompany you on your journey, explore different routes with you, help you evaluate which route to take, and identify any potential obstacles along the way. However, you ultimately have control over which path you choose to take. The psychologist provides support and guidance, but never makes decisions for you.
How do I know if the psychologist is right for me?
One of the most challenging aspects of the therapy process is finding a psychologist who is the right fit for you. With a variety of psychologists available, it is essential to choose the one who best meets your needs. This process is like going window shopping for psychologists, where you can explore various options to find the best fit. We recommend scheduling an initial appointment call to get to know your psychologist and ask any questions you may have. During this call, you can inquire about their qualifications, skills, area of expertise, and therapeutic approach. We encourage you to prepare a list of questions and qualities you are seeking beforehand. After the first call, evaluate your level of comfort and decide if you would like to schedule a session with them. After your first session, you can decide if you would like to continue working with them or seek another psychologist.
How many sessions are required to ‘get it better’?
There is no fixed number of therapy sessions that will guarantee you start feeling better. The duration of therapy varies from person to person, and sessions continue until you feel you have achieved your goals and acquired the necessary skills to manage yourself better.
How do you maintain privacy and confidentiality of our sessions?
At ListenWorks, maintaining privacy and confidentiality is a core principle that we uphold for all of our clients. We value the trust that our clients place in us, and we have a shared confidentiality policy in place. This means that we document and share information about therapy sessions with our supervisors, team members, and other mental health professionals, but we do not disclose any identifying information about our clients. This supervision practice ensures that we provide the best possible service to our clients, and all team members are bound by this confidentiality policy. Confidentiality in case you are a minor (below 18 years of legal age): If you are a minor, we may have to disclose certain details to your guardian, mostly to make sure you are safe. Before taking this step of disclosing any information, we prefer to discuss this information with them, which is also dependent upon their competencies. We try to reach a consensus through this discussion. Limitations to Confidentiality: The psychologist would have to break this confidentiality when we are worried about your/someone else’s safety. Here at ListenWorks, we will try to (explicitly) inform you about the steps we will have to take so as to safeguard everyone’s safety. Relationship with the counsellor: You and the psychologist would only be sharing a professional relationship.
